So many news stories happen throughout the week that I never have time to talk about them all when they come out! So instead I’m going to do a weekly review of the main stories. Of course I’ll miss some and of course this round up will probably fall by the way side before too long, but if you help me by reading and sharing I’ll keep it as up to date as possible!

Punisher Rewards Us

Finally finally we got the first full length trailer for the next Marvel/Netflix show…The Punisher. Here it is!

Well It’s safe to say that it looks brutal as f**k! Many people were worried that the show wouldn’t be able to retain the tone the character had in Daredevil season 2 but if anything the trailer shows they have upped the violence, brutality and sheer power in Jon Bernthal’s performance. It looks like the show will flesh our Frank Castle’s character a bit more and give us a closer look at his origin, although the scenes with his wife differ from the explanation given in Daredevil as to how his family were killed, so it’s likely this is just a dream. Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page is back and in trouble again. We also see Micro, played by Ebon Moss-Machrach, essentially Castle’s tech guy for many years in the comics. Still loads of mystery surrounding the release of the show but it is definitely hotly anticipated!

Tomb Raider?

Another day another trailer. This one not so good but before I ruin it more for you, have a watch;

Well….that happened. I was really looking forward to this but now I’m very very worried. It seems the video game movie curse is as strong as ever! Clearly the film is inspired by the more recent Tomb Raider games and I appreciate the aesthetic. One of the problems seems to be that they have tacked on the first episode of Iron Fist! The heir to a big company comes back to claim her rightful place? The mysterious death of a father? Oh and some incredibly dodgy CGI. I know it’s not a finished film yet but some of the effects are mediocre at best. Getting away from the early Tomb Raider games and the Angelina Jolie films was a good idea but just because it looks different doesn’t mean it’s going to be good. Something I did like was the traditional Tomb Raider puzzles and traps (even though the spinning spiked looks crap). For me Tomb Raider is all about the puzzles so it’s good to see them here. And Lara will be getting her classic dual pistols at some point, I’m guessing it’s going to be quite late in the film however. I loved Alicia Vikander’s performance in Ex Machina, I just hope she isn’t tarnishing her reputation with this! Tomb Raider is in cinemas 16th March 2018.

Who watches the Watchmen TV show?

Announced a while ago, the Watchmen TV series has gained a lot of interest! Well It’s payed off because the show has been officially greenlit for a pilot! Showrunner Damon Lindelof shared the image below of the writer’s room confirming pre-production had begun. It’s always nice as well when the creators reference to source material, in this case the legs you can see belong to the retirement trophy from the graphic novel that was presented Hollis Mason,, the first Nite Owl.

Sabrina The Teenage Witch spinoff?

The CW network just love their angsty teen shows. I honestly never thought I’d be hearing about a spin-off of the popular 90s TV show starring Melissa Joan Hart, especially this long after the show ended. Well according to Entertainment Weekly, the show will be titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and take most of it’s themes from the comic of the same name. Get ready for a much much darker show, emphasising on the occult and demonic side of witchcraft instead of a whimsical adventures. This ain’t you 90s Sabrina no more!

Taika Watiti circling Akira

Director of one of the most anticipated films of the year, Taika Watiti is apprently in talks with Warner Brothers to helm a live-action Akira remake. At first I was was not too please with this news. Akira is one of if not my favourite anime film of all time and I don’t think it should be messed with. After my rage had dissipated, I came round to the idea. Taika Watiti is a very visual filmmaker and Akira demands a certain aesthetic that you don’t get from a lot of other places. Having recently watched the Ghost in The Shell remake I am very wary for live-action anime interpretations as that film shows how wrong it can go. If Thor: Ragnarok is good then my faith in Waiti will be strengthened. Be kind with my beloved Akira please!

Linda Hamilton back for another Terminator film?

In another example of not letting things go, James Cameron has confirmed a new trilogy of Terminator films is in the works with the help of Tim Miller, the first of which will be a direct sequel to T2: Judgement Day. Not only this but Arnold and Linda Hamilton will both be returning to fill their original roles. Having Arnold in the film is not a surprise but we haven’t seen Hamilton since T2. Cameron also stated that they are seeking a bunch of new faces to carry the trilogy but the returning characters will anchor the story. How has Sarah Connor spent her time over the last few decades? Hoe much of Terminator: Genisys will these new films ignore? I’m hoping it will be most of it!

Han Solo running through Kessel?

Ever since Ron Howard took the wheel of the STILL untitled Han Solo standalone Star Wars film, the number of teases, set photos and new stories has gone through the roof. One of the most recent nuggets was this image;

spicey

Whilst this could be a meaningless photo from a random piece of set, it was the single word Ron Howard tweeted the image out with that has got fans talking. “Spicy?” For those not in the know, this is a clear reference to the Spice Mines of Kessel. You may remember a certain Corellian Smuggler making reference to making the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. This was a common route used by smugglers through a very dangerous area of space. If this tease is to be believed then the film looks to be re-visiting a crucial moment in Han Solo’s past. Could we see this famous Kessel run take place? This Star Wars fan definitely wants it! Han Solo is set for a My 2018, we might even get to learn it’s title soon!

CW Crossover Crisis!

If you’ve read any of my CW Superhero reviews you will know that I love a good crossover. The Arrow-verse went big last year with the Dominator invasion and it had a lot of people thinking where they could go from there. Well we have our answer. This year’s crossover will be titles Crisis on Earth-X and what better way to announce it than in the form of this awesome comic cover;

Crisis

There’s lots in this image to get us excited. Firstly it looks like Barry and Iris will be getting married, or at least trying to until the ceremony gets rudely interrupted. We know Barry will be coming back from the Speedforce so that’s not a surprise but it does seem a bit fast for the couple. The title of the crossover is a clear nod to Crisis on Infinite Earths story, one of DC’s most well know stories. The crossover will see most of our regular heroes facing what look like some evil versions from another world. There’s an evil Supergirl, Green Arrow and what looks like the Reverse Flash although he has a “SS” symbol on his chest which suggests these bad guys could be from the a world where the Nazis won WW2.

We will also be seeing another dark archer and some new characters, The Ray played by Russell Tovey and Zari (who’s character in the comics is Isis but that has been changed for the show for obvious reasons) played by Tala Ashe. These new characters will join the Legends of Tomorrow at some point and it’s always good to see some new blood (and some new powers) in these shows. If you look closely you can also see a more comic accurate version of Captain Cold. Looks like Snart will have a bigger role this season. Speaking of cold things, Caitlin Snow is still going by the name of Killer Frost so maybe her transformation back into the Caitlin we saw in the Season 4 trailer won’t be as swift as we first thought. All the CW superhero shows return this autumn. Oh and don’t forget Black Lightning is coming too!
