Well, who ever thought we would get here? It has been one whole year since we started our little community made up of bloggers, podcasters, YouTubers and generally awesome geeky people. At the risk of sounding sappy, our interactions and conversations with these people have been absolutely brilliant. There have been in-depth conversations on the minutia of various films and TV shows, reviews and recommendations for countless forms of media and laughs, lots of laughs. Some of the Geekstalkers have had some hard times in the last year and the rest have been there always ready to offer support. I want to personally thank each and every one of the Geekstalkers, and those people who are regular interactors but are not official members.
2017 was all about creating the community and settling in, 2018 will see an expansion. We have already had a new member in 2018 and I hope we will see many more over the coming months. Some networks/communities you see on the net are focused on promotion, reception and critical acclaim, our focus is to have fun and I think we have gone far beyond that with ease! If you want to read the last 12 months worth of Geekstalkers articles you can find them HERE.
As 2018 is progressing fast, the Geekstalkers have chosen their most anticipated things in the coming year. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we shall begin.

So when I was asked to share my most anticipated thing of 2018, my brain started spinning. For one, there’s a ton of cool stuff coming out this year. And two, I didn’t want to be too obvious with my choice. And choosing just one thing could be a bit too challenging, so I’ve allowed myself to choose three. One movie, one show, one video game So here we go.
First off, the movie. And for that I am going with Mute, the latest movie from director Duncan Jones, director of the fantastic Moon and the great Source Code. Oh yeah, he also made Warcraft, which wasn’t bad, but not quite as good as those other two either. So what is Mute? It’s a sci-fi-thriller (that is clearly inspired by Blade Runner) starring Alexander Skarsgård as a mute bartender who has to go up the city’s criminals to find out what happened to his girlfriend. It’s an interesting concept, and the recently released
trailer looks quite awesome, which just makes me even more excited. Plus, with a cast containing not only Skarsgård, but also Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux, Rob Kazinsky, and many more cool people, it looks to be one of the most intriguing movies of the year. Mute is set to be released on Netflix in late February.
For a show I decided to go with season 3 of The Expanse. I started watching the show last year and fell in love with it almost instantly. I’ve talked about the show in a previous Geekstalkers article, so if you want more in-depth stuff you can go read that. But to quickly summarize, it’s a sci-fi show set in the future and is about a whole bunch of people on various missions during a time of great tension between Earth and
Mars. The crew of a ship following a distress signal, a politician on Earth trying to keep the peace, a detective looking for a missing person. These are all intriguing storylines that make for some of the most compelling sci-fi in recent years. And even though we don’t really know anything about season 3, I am still incredibly excited. Like I said, I already love the show, and I’m sure season 3 will be another knockout. Especially with people like David Strathairn joining the cast.
And for my third thing (the video game) I have to go with Red Dead Redemption 2. As you might’ve guessed, it’s the sequel to Red Dead Redemption, a 2010 open world western game from Rockstar Games. In it you played as former outlaw John Marston (masterfully played by Rob Wiethoff) who on the order of some government assholes has to round up his old crew. It was a very immersive game with a great story and fantastic characters. And based on the few trailers we’ve seen for the sequel, it looks to be as
intriguing. Set before the first game, you play as Arthur Morgan (voice not confirmed), a member of the Van Der Linde gang as he does outlaw stuff. And all I need. Western. Outlaws. Rockstar. I am so in. This game will be awesome.
So those were some things that I’m excited for in 2018. Did I cheat by picking three things? Maybe. But Dave (the editor) probably won’t complain. Anyhow, that’s it for me.
Have a good one.

It might be an extremely obvious choice, but in 2018 it is difficult to look past the release of Avengers: Infinity War.
There are so many eagerly anticipated films due for release this year, but none of these have that ‘legacy’ feeling that Infinity War has. It has all been leading up to this moment. Ten years of well thought out character and story development. The MCU created the blueprint for a new kind of storytelling, the techniques they used are now replicated in other franchises. Everything has to be a ‘shared universe’. And while others have tried to copy the MCU template, many have failed in their attempts to replicate the MCU’s success, both with fans and at the box office.
The idea that in a few months’ time I will be sat in the cinema watching ALL of the MCU characters sharing the same screen on an unprecedented scale is simply mind-blowing. This is ten years of story and character payoff ready to explode on to the big screen in a flurry of super punches and web slinging, and it’s difficult not to get excited about it.

I mentioned this recently on our podcast, the thing I am eagerly awaiting in 2018 is the next installment in Ben Aaronvitch’s PC Peter Grant series. I believe the seventh book is called ‘Lies Sleeping’ and due for publication in June 2018 – although the last two have been pushed back from summer publications to November, so it’s possible I might have a slightly longer wait. The Peter Grant series are my favourite book series since Harry Potter, and in many ways could be described as a grown up law enforcement version of Harry Potter.
I adore the series. The stories are captivating, the characters well written, I never see the twists in the plot coming, and they are so incredibly well researched that the authenticity they contain always leaves me slightly wondering whether they might be based on something more than fiction. I really appreciate the way each book is a story contained within itself, but related to the overarching plot which runs throughout the series. The sixth book ended on a particularly interesting note – not quite a cliff hanger but adding a new dimension to explore in the next outing, which I am really looking forward to.

It’s a big year in pop culture. In TV, Westworld is coming back, Jessica Jones season 2 and Daredevil season 3 are coming. In comics, Doomsday clock is just starting up and Robert Kirkman is releasing a brand new comic called Oblivion Song. In super hero movies we have Black Panther, Antman and the Wasp from Marvel; the first DCU none Trinity movie in Aquaman, Fox having a(final?) stab at the X-Men franchise and Deadpool 2.
I’m looking forward to all of this, however the thing that’s getting my juices flowing (sorry for the mental image) the most right now is issue 144 of…..Invincible. The last issue of a comic book that I LOVE.
Originally it was due to be released on Wednesday 24th January, however it’s been pushed back until Wednesday 14th February. This marks issue 12 in the End Of All Things final run of this wonderful comic.
I’ve extolled the virtues of this comic many times, on our podcast, guesting on The Invincible Podcast, on these geekstalkers articles and anytime someone asks for a recommendation online! I won’t do it again, suffice to say that Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and Corey Walker have crafted a perfect comic book story, focused on longform storytelling, that has run for 15 years. I cannot wait to see what happens to all the characters I love and I’m excited for the future of the brand (books, movies, video games, TV shows?!).

Out of all the movies and TV shows in 2018, I’m most excited for “Avengers: Infinity
War.” Ever since Thanos first appeared at the end of “The Avengers,” I’ve been anxious to see the Mad Titan clash with the heroes of the MCU in his quest for the Infinity Stones. I’m thrilled to have the Russo Brothers directing this epic event, especially after they’ve proven they can tell fast-paced, large-scale comic book movies with lasting consequences (i.e. “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War”). Getting to see the MCU come together in such a major way will be an amazing sight to behold. Avengers Assemble!

2018 is going to be a great year to be a geek. There are so many films, TV shows, games, comics and books coming out that I will want to consume and I know already that I won’t get to them all. I of course am looking forward to things like Infinity War, Jessica Jones Season 2, many more Star Wars canon stories but the one thing above all else I am waiting for is the live-action adaptation film Ready Player One.
I know a lot of people think this is going to be crap and there’s a chance it will be but this film is based on my favourite book of all time. I only recently read it but it is the only book I’ve ever had that I wanted to read again immediately after finishing it. Full of 80s pop culture references mixed with an expansive role playing adventure with real stakes, it is a fantastic story and if they even get it half right I will enjoy the film. It’s going to have dodgy effects and I’m not a huge fan of the lead actor Tye Sheridan but I’m confident I’m going to come away from this having enjoyed it and that’s the least you want from a film. Time will tell if it’s any good but it will have hours of re-watch value just trying to spot all the easter eggs!
We hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the latest utterings from the Geekstalkers as we love talking about anything and everything. It isn’t much of a Community if people don’t get involved and put their thoughts, feelings and opinions across. All our welcome and we would love for you to join the conversation! All our social media links, websites etc can be found below and I promise, you will not be disappointed if you start chatting to some or all of the Geekstalkers. They are a brilliant bunch of people who just love stuff! It just so happens that a lot of that stuff is liked by a lot of other people too!
Here’s to another awesome year!
