2014’s Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt was a fun, action-packed and visually impressive film which surprised a lot of people. Mixing Groundhog Day with Avatar, it was an interesting story if at times getting confused with its own paradox of a solder having to relive the same day, dying over and over until succeeding in his mission.

Cruise Blunt

The film performed relatively well and slotted into the average Tom Cruise action film category, joining the likes of Jack Reacher and most of the Mission Impossible franchise. It came as no surprise then when a sequel was announced. Both Cruise and Blunt are set to return which makes sense as they were both alive at the end of the first film. I’m assuming director Doug Liman has come up with a variation on the plot device as Cruise’s character seemingly put an end to the cycle of repeats after SPOILER killing the Omega and resetting his day completely.

What is interesting is that the film is reportedly going to be both sequel and prequel. You have to keep in mind that time manipulation is key to these films so I’m not even going to hazard a guess at how this is going to work but I am certainly intrigued! Liman is certainly excited about it;

I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of” – Speaking to Collider

So the director is pumped for it and both its main stars are too. The only sticking point at the moment is the title. In an age when Hollywood is criticised for having run out of imagination and creating no properties, endlessly producing nothing but sequels, reboots, remakes and reimaginings, the Edge of Tomorrow sequel title is almost meta in its simplicity. Are you ready for it? The film will be titled Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat.

Yep, that’s it. You may be thinking that sounds familiar, and you’re right. Live, Die, Repeat was the tagline of the first film which most people mistook for the title of the film itself. I’m going to leave you with that title and let it sink in. Finding it ridiculous yet? Trust me, it’s been a few days since this story came out and every time I think about it it gets worse.

There’s no release date yet but I’m sure once Tom Cruise finishes his latest Impossible Mission or Mummy fight, he will get round to setting a date. Stay tuned!
