After the confusion caused by the Indiana Jones 5 announcement, it’s a relief that sometimes film studios make a good choice. I’ll say this now, I was not a fan of Jurassic World. It took itself far too seriously and I could only accept it as a sub-par monster film. It did not feel like a Jurassic World film. Yes I know there were lots of dinosaurs in it and I know they were trying to bring in a younger audience by making it sort of self aware.
It was a great idea setting it 10 years after the events of the first film and turning the island into a proper theme park, while making reference to current fad culture in that the public always want something bigger and better, suggesting that we would even get bored of dinosaurs if they walked the Earth again. But poor storytelling and plot logic combined with terrible acting from most of the cast and being smashed over the head with references from previous films, ruined it for me.
Naturally I was not inspired when the sequel was announced. There is a ray of light however! Jeff Goldblum, Dr Ian Malcolm himself is set to return for Jurassic World 2. It was inevitable really after being reference in Jurassic World but it’s brilliant to have finally got confirmation. Dr Malcolm was one of the best parts of the first film in the franchise and arguably was the only reason The Lost World was watchable, God knows isn’t wasn’t Vince Vaughan or a gymnastic Raptor fight!
Will we get a further explanation of Chaos Theory or another ‘I told you so’ scene? How cynical has he grown since the last film?
We know he is definitely not a fan of the parks, will he brought in to help save the island again or is he just there as an advisor? The only thing we have seen about the film so far is this photo.
I don’t think there is even confirmation of the films plot. So who knows what he will be up to? All we need now is Sam Neil to come back and I’ll be happy. Goldblum is having a bit of a resurgence recently, having reprised his role in the Independence day sequel and soon to be seen in Thor: Ragnarok. There’s not stopping him!
Jurassic World 2 is set for release on 22nd June 2018 so we shouldn’t have long to wait until we get some details.
