It’s been a few days since this trailer came out and since then I’ve been debating whether I should write about it. I know very little about the characters this show is based on, having only experienced them in some of the wider Marvel comics stories. I do however like the characters quite a lot and their dynamic is different enough to be interesting. The pair have a bond that most superhero partnerships couldn’t even dream of with their powers working best when the are together. They share an origin and it looks like a lot of their origin will be shown in this series. Take a look at the trailer below and we’ll talk after!

Before we get into the similarities and possible differences to the comics, it’s very obvious this show isn’t aimed at me, it is without a doubt another teen drama aimed at the younger market. Offering displays of angst and ‘real’ issues for teens and when that gets boring, crow barring in some superpowers. That might sound negative, but with shows like Riverdale being increasingly popular, and comic book movies still being at the top of the cinematic mountain, it makes sense to keep the young people interested by giving them something specific for them!

So, onto the trailer itself. It doesn’t actually look that bad! We seem to be getting an almost straight adaptation of the characters comic origins. Cloak aka Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) and Dagger aka Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) will meet in desperate circumstances. It looks like Tandy will lose her home, lifestyle and maybe ends up living rough? While Tyrone gets into some trouble with a corrupt cop and some gangs?

In the comics, once they have met they end up being taken in by a group of strangers who deliver them to a scientist who injects them with a new brand of heroin which gives them their powers. I don’t know if they are going to go down this route but it looks like they are going to accidentally discover their powers. Tandy shocks Tyrone back at one point and accidentally stabs someone with a light dagger.

We also see Tyrone wake up confused on the roof of a Roxxon Corp (those guys get everywhere) building shrouded in a cloak. Clearly he has accidentally teleported himself there. In the comics the pair make it their mission to bring down the illegal drugs industry and I wouldn’t be surprised if they put that into the show, there has to be a moral message after all!

One major change it seems is the pair will have met as young children. Tandy is involved in a car accident and trapped in a submerged car and gets rescued by a young Tyrone. Do they go their separate ways after this because they don’t seem to know each other when meeting as teenagers.

Without seeing much more I can’t really decide whether this will be any good but I’m willing to give it a chance. The actors are unknown (at least to me anyway) so I have no opinions on them either. Cloak and Dagger is set to debut on Freeform in 2018 so I guess we will have to wait until then to see how our young, angst filled, romance focused superheroes will fair in the ever increasingly saturated superhero market.
