It wasn’t too long ago that we were talking about the Gambit movie being on track for an early 2017 start to production. This film seems to be cursed and not even the success of the Deadpool film has helped to keep it a float.

A couple of weeks ago The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Doug Liman, the most recent appointed director of the project had left. At this point, the only consistent part of the film is its star Channing Tatum. Apparently the film is not dead yet but it is circling the proverbial drain.

A search for a new director is still under way and as far as we know the film is still on for it’s 2017 start (although no-one will be surprised when it inevitably gets put back again).

All is not lost however, Gambit may be on it’s last legs but Doug Liman has moved onto a new, more interesting project. Supposedly titled ‘Dark Universe’, he is to direct a Warner Bros’ / DC version of Justice League Dark.

A film that originally had Guillermo del Toro fixed to direct, it will feature a group of ‘heroes’ from DC comic lore who are far from the traditional superheroes we are used to.

John Constaine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Deadman and Etrigan the Demon are rumoured to form the team, all of which who are characters dealing with demonic/mystical/magical enemies. The film is sure to be very different visually and tricky to do well in live action.

Why not tackle this team in animation instead? That must be easier to do? Well, a Justice League Dark animated film is also in production and will form part of the animated DCEU.

I’m not sure how I feel about this project and I don’t know for certain if it will be included in the main DCEU. The critic reaction to magic and mysticism on screen isn’t usually very good. Suicide Squad tried it with some success but it doesn’t seem to fit with the wider DCEU.

That might be me being a little too critical as the DCEU is still in it’s early days and with each film that comes out certain magical, mystical aspects will creep in. After all, many of the Justice League members if not inspired by mythology are drawn from it! Wonder Woman herself is technically half god!!
