Since SDCC 2016 we have been very slowly getting little insights into the Captain Marvel movie development. We know that Brie Larson will be filling the space boots of Carol Danvers. We have even seen Larson researching and getting into character!
Now, it seems, we are starting to get story details. Nothing concrete, but we are getting the first indications of where the story will be going.
Speaking on the Any Time With Vin Forte podcast, co-writer of the movie, Nicole Perlman said they will be changing the origin story for Captain Marvel.
“She’s obviously such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently,” Perlman said. “But here’s the thing: if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen.”
It wasn’t until reading this quote that I realised both character origins are very similar! Both Hal Jordan and Carol Danvers were in the Air force and both obtained their powers from an alien. The details of each is very different and they have many different stories but the similarities are obvious.
It makes sense that Marvel want to distance themselves from Green lantern, especially considering the car crash that was the 2011 DC film, but maybe there are other reasons behind the change. Could it be because the story would be tricky to portray properly on screen? After all Danvers powers started to manifest after having a physical relationship with the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell and a scientific accident.
And considering that Marvel seems to be going a bit more cosmic with its films coming in phase 4 (with Nova rumoured to be popping up), they want a simple origin so that the rest of her story can seem even more other worldly.
Whatever the reason for the change I trust Marvel with their decisions. They have done pretty well with their MCU so far. Keep it up guys!
