Something that came completely out of left field at SDCC 2016 was the trailer for the new Mutant TV show Legion. A show that appears to be loosely linked to the X-men universe, it has a strange plot and an even stranger trailer!
Starring Dan Stevens as the main character David Heller who, in the comics at least, is Professor Charles Xavier’s son.
Here’s the shows plot summary:
David Haller, A.K.A., Legion is a haunted man, with power beyond comprehension. His power does not come free, as it comes at the steep cost of David’s mind. Plagued by numerous split personalities, each commanding a different aspect of his power, David is trying to find his way back to sanity but he’s getting tired and is about to give up until he meets the girl of his dreams.
Seems pretty cool right? Check out the trailer below to see how crazy the show will be!
So……there it is……..Don’t worry, I have no clue what is going on either!
David Haller is clearly being investigated or interviewed about some event and the trailer itself tells us that he thinks he is mentally unstable, but may be the most powerful Mutant they have ever encountered!
The use of the term mutant is key! It is a licensed word and seeing as this show is being made by 20th Century Fox it is understandable that they will try and have at least subtle links to their wider universe. How much the show will be connected is unknown at this point, but I’m thinking it might follow the Agents of SHIELD route, a contained story but have links to the films.
With the feature of multiple personalities for David Haller we will see all kinds of powers and the visuals look as trippy and the humour filtering through the trailer. I get the feeling the show is inspired somewhat by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind in that the protagonist isn’t entirely sure of what is going on.
The only thing I can say for sure at this point is that I am very intrigued to see where this goes. Come on Fox uses the endless possibilities from the mutant franchise well!! (for once)
