The Force Awakens has been out for a few days around the world now so I think it’s about time we discussed some of the events in the film. As the title of this post says, there will be HUGE SPOILERS below so if you haven’t seen the film I suggest you let the Force flow through you as it takes you to your closest cinema!
This is your last SPOILER WARNING! Stop now if you don’t want to know anything about the film!
Right, now that is out of the way we can get straight into it! As I said in my spoiler-free review, The Force Awakens in my opinion is the best Star Wars film to date. It is the perfect mix of nostalgia and modernity, I had a huge grin etched onto my face the whole time and I can’t wait to see it again at least a couple of times!
Though the film isn’t perfect I had one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever had. However, it has left me with a lot of questions. In no particular order, here are some things that I would like explained:
- How did Maz Kanata get hold of Luke’s first Lightsaber?
The Lightsaber in question originally belonged to Anakin Skywalker and was given to Luke by Obi Wan Kenobi during the events of A New Hope. The last time we saw this weapon it was tumbling down the huge shaft with Luke’s Severed hand still attached after his first saber battle with Darth Vader.
Maz Kanata says that the story of how she got it is for another time and I hope they do explain this. I would have thought the weapon would have gone the same way as Luke when he fell down the shaft and ended up falling out of the bottom of Cloud City completely, but maybe it conveniently fell somewhere else for someone to collect later. Who knows?
2. What turned Ben Solo to the Dark Side?
It was revealed fairly early on in the film that Kylo Ren is Han Solo and Leia’s son Ben (tear jerk moment when Han shouts his name!) We know that he was trained by Luke Skywalker as part of Luke trying to start a new Jedi Order. We also know that something went wrong and Ben gave into the temptation of the Dark Side and destroyed what Luke was trying to build. We don’t know what the trigger event was, or if it was something that happened over a long time. It has to be something major as it resulted in Han and Leia having some kind of separation.
Did they or one of them do something to upset Ben? Does he resent them for sending him off to train with Luke? I expect this to be a major plot point in the next film.
3. Is Rey Luke’s daughter?
It is safe to say in the Star Wars universe, every there is no such thing as coincidence. We know that Rey was left on Jakku at a young age by her parents (and she has been waiting for them to return all this time), and it turns out that she has a very strong connection to the Force. In my Trailer Talk videos I theorised that Rey and Kylo Ren were brother and sister, this would mean that Rey is in fact the daughter of Han and Leia.
I think that is less likely now due to there being no reference to this in the film, and neither Han nor Leia seem to know who Rey is, although there were a couple of moments when I thought Han suspected she was related to him. Also Kylo Ren seemed to be aware of her before the two meet. Is she part of the Solo or Skywalker family? The look between Rey and Luke at the end of the film doesn’t appear to be one of recognition but then if they have been separated for 20 years then neither would know what the other looked like. Her origin is going to be of major importance but I think we are going to be guessing for a long while yet.
4. Who is Supreme Leader Snoke?
There has been a theory for a while that Snoke is in fact Darth Plaegius. I don’t think is very likely as the new film seems to be trying to distance itself from the prequels as much as it can (which I am totally on board with). In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine says that Plaegius was killed by his apprentice and it would be unimaginative to bring him back. I think Snoke is going to be connected to a character that we have seen before, according to Andy Serkis he is really old and has been around for some time.
He seems to be the leader of the First Order, so maybe he was the real power behind the Empire or maybe he just seized control when the Emperor was killed. Maybe he was a Jedi or Dark Jedi from before the days of the Empire and has been building his power since then waiting for the time to strike. We aren’t even sure if he is human at this point, he has some obvious physical scars and probably is an alien of some kind but we know next to nothing about him.
5. How powerful is Kylo Ren?
His display of Force powers is impressive. He can stop laser bolts in mid air and walk around while it is still hanging there without any effort. He can also draw information out of people’s minds which little effort (except in the case of Rey where she turns the tables on him). He is feared by the soldiers of the First Order but when faced with someone who can also use the Force he doesn’t appear that formidable. Rey has no training and was able to best him in a Lightsaber duel by opening herself up to the Force.
She was also able to read his mind, fight his mental intrusion and steal a Lightsaber from his force grasp. Ok, during their duel he was quite badly injured and it appears he was trying to recruit her rather than kill her, but she was a complete amateur and he has had training. He is the Master of the Knights of Ren but as Snoke suggests he hasn’t completed his training so I’m thinking he is on par with Luke Skywalker as he was in Empire Strikes Back. Vader was definitely more powerful.
6. What caused Finn to break his conditioning?
We know that the First Order Stormtroopers are brainwashed from a very early age into being obedient and compliant. They are told that Rebel heroes such as Luke Skywalker are the enemy and the First Order is trying to restore order to the galaxy.
Captain Phasma herself states that he passed the tests and it was his first offence when he helped Poe Dameron escape, so why is Finn different to the thousands of other troopers? I find it hard to believe that the murder of Lor San Tekka (Max Von Sydow) would be the trigger, he must have seen other things that made him question his role and ultimately turn him into a traitor to the First Order.
Maybe Finn’s original family have something to do with it. Does he have some connection to the Force that helped him fight the conditioning? I predict a confrontation between Finn and Phasma in an upcoming film when I hope there will be some more explanation.
7. How did Han Solo lose the Millennium Falcon?
Han says that the Falcon was stolen from him and he has been searching for it ever since. Based on his reaction to letting Lando pilot the Falcon in Return of the Jedi it seems odd that he would allow the Falcon to be taken from him. I was expecting some kind of gambling explanation, after all that’s how he got the ship in the first place.
How did it stay hidden on Jakku for so long? And more importantly, how does Rey know how to pilot it better than Han himself? Some of the moves she pulls with the ship were incredible and not something we have seen Han do! Hopefully Rey will look after the ship better than Han did!
8. How did Poe Dameron get back to the Resistance?
Poe explains to Finn that he woke up after the crash and it was night time, Finn was no where to be seen so he found his way off planet.
Finn had to avoid quicksand and walk for hours through the Jakku desert before he found any signs of life, so where did Poe go? How far from the wreckage was he thrown? How long was he out for? Did he find another settlement close by? He didn’t even have his own jacket to protect him from the sun as Finn took it with him.
Maybe he had a way of contacting the Resistance, but if he did why didn’t he search for BB-8 before he left the planet? I think this is going to be one of those questions that will be left unanswered.
9. Why did Luke exile himself?
I get that he felt ashamed by the failure to keep Ben Solo in the light and the destruction of his new Jedi order, but is exile the only option? Yoda did the same thing after Order 66 and it just seems like they are taking the easy way out. Also if he exiled himself and went into hiding why is there a map to his location?
Han and Leia don’t know where he is, R2D2 has an incomplete map of Luke’s location but Rey had his location in her mind when Kylo Ren was trying to read her. It doesn’t seem like he was hiding so what has he been doing all this time? Just staring out into the ocean? Waiting for a new apprentice? There was far too little of Luke in this film. JJ Abrhams said that Luke had been absent from the marketing material for a good reason, I can only assume that reason was because he is only in the film for about a minute!
10. What is the deal with with C-3Po’s red arm?
There is only a brief mention of the fact that 3PO has a new arm, and he appears to have obtained after Han Solo left Leia. There is no explanation as to how he got it or why the Resistance couldn’t get one that was the
same colour. Did he lose it in a battle? Was he taken apart again like he was in Empire? It probably won’t be important but it seems strange that is is such an obvious change to the character’s appearance to not have some kind of significance.
How did Kylo Ren get hold of Darth Vader’s helmet?
The last time we saw the helmet it was being burnt along with Vader’s body on a funeral pyre on Endor in Return of the Jedi. Based on the condition of the helmet it must have been in the pyre for some time but does that mean the ashes of Vader’s head ares till in there?! Only Luke seemed to know where Vader was burnt so how did Ben Solo find out?
Was this part of his training to go and visit the site of his grandfather’s end as a lesson? Did Snoke tell him about it and if so how did Snoke know? Kylo Ren doesn’t appear to know about Vader’s redemption before he dies, or if he does he is refusing to acknowledge it.
He is trying to emulate him so much that he might just be hunting for artifacts that are imbued with the Dark side. I though originally this was how Anakin’s Lightsaber came back into play but that isn’t the case.
I’m sure a lot of these questions will be explained if not in future films then in the new expanded universe that will grow around the films. We won’t see much explanation on screen until 2017 when Episode VIII is released, but there might be some hints in 2016’s Star Wars : Rogue One.
It was an incredible movie for a Star Wars fan, and my fan-boy mind has gone into overdrive wanting to know more and trying to figure out the things we don’t know. I literally can’t wait for the next film and will be counting the days until it arrives.
